New Track: Testimony

There has been a change of plans since I posted my last track. The low key, melodious, woodwind-y piece got put on hold for a bit. It’s about halfway done or so. I was asked by my church to put together a backing track for a video they were making, so that took precedence over the other project. They asked for a track that was between 5 and 7 minutes long which is a bit longer than most of the pieces I have composed, but I was up to the (mild) challenge.

Since it was going to be a backing track anyways, I opted to use more repeats than I usually do; and by “more” I mean they existed as opposed to not existing. I typically don’t do a lot of copy-paste style repeats. It’s kind of like how cartoonists don’t like copying and pasting the background for each panel they draw. I was okay with it in this situation, though, since, for a backing track, you want to have more or less consistent volume, texture, etc. Big orchestral swells and the like would distract from the purpose of the video, and making a 7 minute long piece that doesn’t ever really go anywhere musically is actually kind of challenging.

New Track: Rise of the Black King

It’s movie trailer time! Doesn’t everyone want to compose music for movie trailers? I know I would love to. Unfortunately no actual movie exists to go along with this music, but you can use your imaginations. I spent a while trying to get the mix right on this. My first draft had WAY too much bass. Since then I got some new better headphones to help me hear what I’m mixing, so I won’t have that problem again. All in all, I think that the track came out pretty okay.

I plan on doing something lower key next. Something with lots of woodwinds and a nice melody. Stay tuned!

New Track: Dragon Rider Encampment

Now available for download at my Band Camp site is a piece entitled Dragon Rider Encampment. Most of the inspiration came from a role-playing game I play with some friends. My current character is a dragon, and the encampment depicted in this piece is from his homeland. Also, due to some mishaps with some software I ordered, I was limited to using only percussion instruments, but I think the piece still turned out really well.

I tried to give the piece a sort of ethnic-y sound without it sounding like music from any existing ethnic group. After all, the piece is meant to depict a setting in a fantasy world.

As will be the case with all the music I post here, if anyone wants to use it in a video (or other) project, shoot me an email! I will more than likely be very quick to grant you permission to do so.
